Mysteries & Myths
The Cevali Empire was at its height and ruled over the Grey Vale over a thousand years ago according to ancient texts. It was during this time (appx. 1200 years ago) that the city of Drakonheim was founded. It was the golden age of the Cevali Empire and the city enjoyed over 200 years of prosperity, and grew to a population of over ten thousand. Then sometime around a thousand years ago the Cevali Empire suddenly collapsed under its own weight. Not surprisingly, today its ancient ruins are still being discovered by common folk and explorers alike, and leaving many to wonder what mysteries might still await discovery? Perhaps an ancient and priceless artifact, or riches beyond imagination? Of course all of this is just simple speculation, yet it’s a dream the simple farming folk of the vale cling.
During the centuries that followed the fall of the Empire cities began to decline, and although Drakonheim was never completely abandoned the city’s population dwindled to less than a tenth of what it was at the height of the Empire. Hundreds of abandoned stone buildings now stand testament to the marvel that Drakonheim once was. Today with a population of barely a thousand most of the city is in terrible disrepair, and many sections are plagued with crime and citizens are left to fend for themselves. Only the wealthiest parts of the city are watched closely now, in large part because they pay the most of the taxes.
Much of the human population of the Grey Vale today can trace their ancestry back to the Cevali Empire, not to mention the countless elves, dwarves, and halflings that fled to the perceived safety of towns like Drakonheim after their own homes were threatened by orcs, gnolls, and hobgoblin raiders.
